SASSA Phone Number and OTP Problems

First identify which step is failing: entering the application phone number in a status check, receiving a message, or completing a verification process. These are different tasks.

Checking status on this website

Our form asks for a 13-digit South African ID number and a 10-digit application phone number beginning with 0. It does not have an OTP field. A new number entered into the checker does not update an application record. If the check fails, read its error before retrying.

Why the registered phone number matters

SASSA’s 6 November 2025 statement asks applicants to use a number registered in their own name. It explains that the number is used for progress notifications and verification messages. Inaccurate contact information can prevent an applicant from completing a requested step.

If a message does not arrive

Check the number you entered and whether your phone can receive SMS. Read the resend or error instruction on the service you are using. Keep a note of the action you tried and the time, without saving the OTP in shared notes. Do not pay someone to bypass verification.

If you no longer have the application number

Open the official SRD portal to find its current contact-update instructions, or ask SASSA how to recover access. Explain that you cannot receive messages on the old number. Avoid repeatedly substituting different numbers in a status form.
